The Corncrake Guest House, Cracoe, near Skipton, Yorkshire Dales
The Corncrake Guest House at Cracoe

The Corncrake is ideally placed for those planning a walking, cycling or touring holiday in the Dales.  Cracoe is about 6 miles from Skipton and close to the Dales villages of Grassington, Rylstone and Hetton. There are excellent walks all around us, and a quarter of a mile to the rear is about 25 square miles of Open Access walking land.

The Corncrake building was completed as a Wesleyan Chapel in 1898, later becoming a private residence. It has been used as a Guest House for about the last thirty years. Recent refurbishment has revealed many of the original features such as the beamed roof and supporting corbels, the Oriel window, and the Vestry doors.

At the rear of the drive lies the Duke of Devonshire's Well, at which the Duke and his family have watering rights for their horses, any time they may be passing. It is not recorded when last his Grace exercised this ancient right, however we do keep handy a pickaxe and shovel against the possibility.

At the Corncrake, everyone is assured of a warm Dales welcome and the best of cooking with home or locally grown ingredients. Breakfast may be chosen from a wide choice of starters and main courses, including our own speciality, the Newfoundland breakfast, served with real maple syrup.

We are sorry that we no longer offer evening meals, but there are numerous good places to eat in the nearby vicinity. We can provide packed lunches to order, but as these are freshly made, we do appreciate s little notice for them.

We have two double rooms, one twin room, and a family room with one double and two singles. All the rooms are "en suite" and each has tea and coffee making facilities and a television. A well-appointed guest lounge has a television, with boxed games available. There is also a piano!.

We regret that because of enormously increased licensing costs (2000% raise!) it is no longer economically sensible for us to sell alcohol. However, guests are very welcome to Bring Their Own.

Our current tariff is as follows:

Double or Twin Room: £59 per room per night (single use £39)

Family Room: £89 per room per night

We offer discounts for stays of three nights or longer.

Well behaved pets will be made very welcome, but only by prior arrangement, please; the nominal charge of £3 will be made for each room with pets.
Mastercard, Visa, Cash, Cheques and Sterling Travellers' Cheques are all welcome.

We are pleased to be able to offer for residents' use
a small sauna and a bathroom

Why the Corncrake at Cracoe?

The derivation of the name comes from the original meaning of the village name, 'Cracoe'. Several sources refer to the 'Hoe' of the 'Crakes', or it could be from the word 'Howe', meaning a small hill or tumulus. The 'Crake' is the Corncrake, which used to be fairly common locally, but now efforts are being made to re-establish it.
