The Local Area

The location of the cottage, on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, makes it ideal as a base for walking or for touring by car. The peace and tranquillity is also ideal for those who simply wish to escape ‘from it all’ for a while.
Reeth was the centre of the lead mining industry. Old cottages and houses surround the magnificent green on which is held a weekly market. There are several eating places and pubs, shops, a craft centre, museum and information centre. Don’t miss the local ice-cream !!

Richmond, 10 miles away, is the market town of Swaledale. Visit the remains of the Norman Castle, the Georgian Theatre, the Richmondshire museum, the Green Howards Military museum or take a walk along the river to Easby Abbey.

Consider taking the bus up Swaledale to Low Row, Gunnerside or Muker and wander back through the meadows or along the river side.

Take a short drive into Wensleydale to Bedale, Leyburn or Hawes, the natural centre of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Visit the Upper Dales museum, or watch the traditional craft of rope making. Nearby is Hardraw Force the highest single drop waterfall in England, or drive over the Stang to Barnard Castle and visit the Bowes Museum with its impressive collection of paintings and porcelain.
